Scottish clans will gather to feast and enjoy their heritage as part of the Spring Ceilidh Saturday, March 27, at the Payson Civic Center, 439 W. Utah Ave.

Organizers of the Ceilidh, which falls under the auspices of the Payson Scottish Days Festival Committee, say the event - the third they have held - not only helps pay for the upcoming Scottish Days but is quickly becoming one of the biggest little ethnic celebrations in the state."People really like the little things we have done that make it authentic," said festival and Ceilidh president Helen Scott.

The Spring Ceilidh (pronounced kay-LEE) will begin at 6 p.m., with the Payson Pipe Band welcoming visitors to the city and leading a procession to the civic center.

The actual dinner/program will begin at 7 p.m. with the presentation of dignitaries, including Utah Sen. LeRay McAllister, R-Orem; Rep. Bill Orton, D-Utah; Payson Mayor Richard Harmer and members of the Payson City Council; Jeffrey McCloud, president of the St. Andrew Society; and Larry McDonald, president of the Utah Scottish Association.

McAllister, who has served as honorary chieftain for the Ceilidh and Scottish Days Festival for the past two years, will pass the Chieftain Staff to Orton, who has Scottish ties from his mother. Orton, who will also act as chieftain for this year's Scottish Days Festival, then will sample the haggis and pronounce the meal fit to eat.

The dinner served at the Ceilidh includes a less traditional haggis than the Scottish variety, which was heart, liver and lungs mixed with suet and seasonings and boiled in a calf's stomach. The haggis served at the Ceilidh is more American, featuring ground beef and heart and liver. The meal will also feature shepherd's pie, a vegetable, salad, rolls and trifle.

An entertainment program, featuring the Payson Pipe Band, the Salt Lake Highland Dancers and the Peteetneet Academy Highland Dancers, will begin after the dinner is served. Also the dancing groups will demonstrate dancing styles and lead patrons in dancing after the program.

Advance reservations are required for the program/dinner, which costs $7.50. For reservations, call either 465-2933 or 465-3714.
