UTAH ARTS COUNCIL AWARDS $868,300 TO 126 NON-PROFIT GROUPS

The Utah Arts Council board of directors has awarded $868,300 in grants to 126 non-profit groups in Utah, according to Carol Nixon, director of the UAC. The grants will be used for general support of major arts organizations or specific arts projects.

In December the council will award up to $56,000 to support first-time grant applicants, for a total fiscal 1990-91 allocation of $924,300. This year's allotment, made available by the 1990 Legislature, is a 1.5 percent decrease from the $938,000 allocated last year. However, the Legislature did provide for an arts endowment of $2.3 million.Grants were awarded in the following areas to organizations listed below:

Dance Arts: American Folk Ballet, $3,400; Ballet Folklorico de las Americas, $1,450; Ballet Repertory Ensemble/Carbon County Chamber of Commerce, $1,950; Ballet West, $85,000; Cache Valley Civic Ballet, $1,950; Children's Dance Theatre, $3,300; Contemporary Danceworks, $1,650; Repertory Dance Theatre, $45,600; Ririe-Woodbury Dance Foundation, $43,650; and Utah Regional Ballet, $875, for a total of $188,825.

Literary Arts: Creative Writing Workshop, Southern Utah State College, $3,500; Junior Creative Writing Program, $2,750; League of Utah Writers, $3,000; Utah State Poetry Society, $3,000; Writers at Work, $6,000. Total, $18,250.

Assistance to Literary Magazines: Ellipsis, Westminster College, $3,800; Inscape, Brigham Young University, $1,300; The Leading Edge, Brigham Young University, $1,350; Metaphor, Weber State College, $1,350; The Petroglyph, $1,100; Quarterly West, University of Utah, $4,300; Tailwind, Southern Utah State College, $720; Weber Studies, Weber State College, $850; Weeds, Snow College, $500; Western Humanities Review, University of Utah, $1,215. Total, $16,485.
