The sound of bagpipes is in the air.

It's time for the annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games, in its 16th year in Salt Lake City. This year's celebration will be held Saturday, June 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cottonwood Park at the Jordan River State Parkway, 300 N. Redwood Road (1700 West).

Clans will gather to participate in the traditional Highland Games, which originated among the ancient clans of northern Scotland. Competitive athletic events, marching bagpipe bands, highland and country dancing and authentic Scottish food will complete the festival agenda.

For Malcolm MacQuoid, the festival is a trip back in time.

"Most of my family who moved here left traditions behind in the old country, but traveling there was a journey that revived childhood memories. I visited an aunt in Scotland who fed me well - very different food, but very filling."

MacQuoid described the Scottish cuisine as "earthy and resourceful."

"The people utilize everyday ingredients that are readily available. There's a lot of game with garden vegetables, lots of soups and stews. It was not unusual for my aunt to put the vegetables on to cook at 2 for dinner at 6 - and keep them boiling all that time," MacQuoid said.

"If I were to identify a single dish that says Scotland, it would be the steak and kidney pie," he said. "Eating it is definitely an acquired taste. I make it long on the steak and short on the kidney."

The public is invited to attend the festival; further questions may be addressed to David Campbell, Utah Scottish Association, 972-5511 or 942-0178.
